Show Foreword In 1973 the National Endowment for the Humanities made an education grant to four American Indian tribes to work in conjunction with the American West Center, University of Utah, to produce their tribal histories. In each case, an archive of material relating to the tribe's past was gathered and indexed and placed in their possession. One of the tribes chosen was the Northern Ute Tribe at the Uintah-Ouray Reservation, Utah. Fred A. Conetah was selected by the Uintah-Ouray Tribal Business Committee to be the tribal historian. He resigned his membership on that committee to take up what he came to consider his most important work for his People. He was trained in research methods and worked with the American West Center in collecting and organizing the archival material and in writing the history. After Mr. Conetah's death, I completed the writing and with Floyd A. O'Neil the editing of the manuscript. Some of the record collections used in the preparation of the archives and this book were: The National Archives; Bureau of Indian Affairs records; The Library of Congress; The Museum of the American Indian; The National Archives and Records Service Branch, Denver, Colorado; The Denver Public Library; The Utah State Historical Society; The Marriott Library, University of Utah; Archives, Historical Department, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; The Uintah-Ouray Tribal Museum. Norma Denver, who has worked on several oral history, curriculum, and research projects for the tribe, provided valuable information and helpful suggestions. Myron Accuttoroop helped research the archives. The Tribal Business Committee worked with the project. Theirs was the final responsibility for management and content. The Tribal Education Department also worked with the project. Curriculum and Advisory Committees reviewed and edited the manuscript. Education Director Forrest Cuch had the major responsibility for seeing this book to its publication. The staff of the American West Center offered technical assistance to the entire project.
