| Description | My MFA experience has taught me that when I allow myself to be vulnerable to the unknown, it creates a better outcome for my work as an artist. My unknowns are based on fear of not knowing how my choices will play out, and a fear of not achieving my full potential. The unknown also represents my relationship to deity and to spiritualism, which gives me the courage to face my fears of what the unknown might contain. I express the idea of the unknown through my study of myths and using visuals representing mythmaking. My masks, performances, drawings, and sculptures create a new mythical world where personas find courage to enter the unknown and walk the symbolic journey of becoming the ideal self. One challenge of achieving one's greatness in a world of secular belief is that we only see myths as false ideas or only as suiting one's agenda. But to me, mythmaking and being vulnerable to the unknown can point to truth and create new opportunities for personal growth. |
