Show pg 15 itself. Just as I finally embraced my own style of art, I decided to embrace my tendency to narrate my work. In my final show, I helped people enter my work through performance, and through short narratives placed on title cards. The gallery became a visual place for me to narrate my journey through the Master of Fine Arts program. The Unknown After the MFA While one of the things I want to do after the program is continue to discover these characters, I also want to explore possibilities through Unknowns, applying them to other facets of my life. Of course, art will be a catalyst for this exploration, but there are other ventures, such as business and brand building where this same philosophy can be applied. Currently, there are many Unknowns, particularly surrounding this gallery owning venture. My engagement, thus far, has taught me a lot about curating and management. Another part of mythmaking is that if I surround myself with the world I want to be associated with, it will only strengthen my abilities as an artist. Through the action of mythmaking, and redefining the myth, I can clearly see myths that work and become truths, and myths that are actually misconceptions and are proved false. My hope is that, as a friend to others, a teacher, a husband, and father, I will not only believe in the myths that I want in my life, but believe in the myths of others. It is important that I support others on their own hero's journey. Whether they be good or bad stories, we live in a world full of storytelling. These stories are the realities we are creating. To end this story, I part with this: I am not a fraud. Ever since I can remember, I always have been an artist. Art was always there inside of me, ready for me to tell the story. I am not a fraud. I am vulnerable to the mask I want to wear, and open to the Big Unknown. I am not a fraud. I am an artist. I truly believe in my own myth. |
