Show WHITE SANDS MISSILE RANGER, MAY 1, 1970-PAGE 3 Pershing is terminated in air Tuesday A test firing of an Army Pershing missile Tuesday (April 28) from the Black Mesa launch site near Blanding, Utah, to White Sands Missile Range, was terminated early in flight due to a malfunction of the missile soon after launch. The missile fell to the ground in an area near the launch site without casualty or damage to property. The cause of the malfunction has not been determined. Units from the U. S. Seventh Army fired the missile which was the first in the spring service practice series. Troops from the Federal Republic of Germany Air Force opened the spring firing series with two launches April 16. Support for the firings is being provided by units of the 2nd Battalion of the 44th Artillery, 9th Artillery (Missile) Group from Ft. Sill, Okla. White Sands Missile Range provides ground and flight safety and instrumentation support for all the firings. |
