Townsend, has been named chief of staff of White Sands Missile Range. He succeeds Colonel William H. O'Connell, who retired Dec. 31. Col. Townsend's successor as deputy for National Range Operations, a position he held for the past year and a half, will be Colonel John P. Broderick, who is serving his second tour of duty at WSMR. Col. Townsend arrived at WSMR in July 1968 from the Pentagon, where he had been chief of the Readiness Branch, Office of the Assistant Chief of Staff for Force Development, since October 1965. He has served overseasinthe Philippines, Korea, Republic of Vietnam, the Congo, and has had three tours of duty in Japan. His service schooling included the Artillery and Missile School, Ft. Sill, Okla.; Command General Staff College, Ft. Leavenworth, Kan.; Army Language School, Mon-terey, Calif., and the Army COL JOHN P. BRODERICK COL ROBERT T. TOWNSEND Management School, Ft. Bel-voir, Va. Col. Townsend was born in San Diego, Calif., but entered the Army from Texas where he attended school. He is a graduate of Texas A & M University, where he receivedabache-lor's degree in mechanical engineering. The new ch^ef of staff is the son of the late Captain George P. Townsend, U. S. Merchant Marine, and Mrs. Townsend who presently lives in Galveston, Tex. He is married to the former Evelyn Seydler of La Grange, Tex. The Townsends have two sons, James, 22, an Infantry officer assigned in Europe; and David, 16, who attends Mayfield High School in Las Cruces. They live at 224 Jupiter, WSMR. 'Colonel Townsend has been awarded the Legion of Merit and the Army Commendation Medal. Colonel Broderick comes to the Missile Range from the Republic of Vietnam, where he served as senior advisor to the ARVN 3rd Area Logistic Command. He was stationed at WSMR from 1960 to 1962, first as Nike project officer. Later he became executive officer for Systems Test Division, Ordnance Mission, and then was elevated to Ordnance Mission executive officer. (Ordnance Mission subsequently became Army Missile Test and Evaluation). Born in Akron, Ohio, Col. Broderick was graduated from high school in Kirkwood, Mo., and entered the U. S. Navy through the V-12 Program during World War II. Following graduation, he was commissioned an ensign in the Navy. He transferred to the U. S. Army Reserve in 1949 as a second lieutenant, and was integrated into the Regular Army in 1952. In addition to serving with the Navy inthe Pacific Theater during 1944-45, he served with the Army in Austria during 1952-55, and was advisor to the Royal Thai Infantry Division, Thailand, in 1958-59. He is a graduate of the Command and General Staff College and Armed Forces Staff College, and received a bachelor's degree in mathematics from the University of Southern Califor^ nia. - Among his awards, Col. Broderick has received the Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf .Cluster, the Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, and the Vietnam Distinguished Service Order. He and his wife, the former (Jeanette Siebrecht, live at 239 Jupiter, WSMR. His father, I Colonel Merl L. Broderick (USA, Ret.) lives at 919. Mc-Farlan, Sebastopol, Calif. His mother is Mrs. E. M. Broderick, 221 Barter Ave., Kirkwood, Mo. |
