Area near Monticello and Moab will be evacuated during U.S. Army missile firings. Utah Missile Testing Will Chase Tourists Special to The Tribune WHITE SANDS MISSILE RANGE, N.M. - Army officials at the missile range here Wednesday announced that an 64,000-acre area adjacent to Canyonlands National Park in Utah will be evacuated periodically, beginning Saturday to permit firing of missiles from Green River, Utah, to the missile range. Officials said evacuation of the area west of U.S. 160-163 between Monticello and Moab has become necessary to avoid endangering the increasing-number of visitors to that part of scenic Utah. Federal Land The entire area is on federally controlled land and encompasses campgrounds at Hatch Point and Wind Whistle Rock. Also in the area are points of interest at Needles Outlook, Anticline Overlook, Indian Creek State Park, Church Rock and La Sal Junction. Until recently, the spokesman said, only a few visitors frequented the area, but with improvement of access roads, the safety zone - known as Advance Ballistic Re-entry System (ABRES) Area 2, has become quite popular both with Utahns and out-of-state visitors. Fragments Spread An Army spokesman added that while the impact of a missile's first stage can be predicted accurately, a missile destroyed in flight over the safety zone results in a shower of debris wKich ' spreads over a wide area, necessitating the large safety zone. Roadblocks on the access roads will be preannounced and set up about an hour prior to launch. In addition, the safety area will be scanned and persons already "there will be asked to leave. |
