Show WHITE SANDS MISSILE RANGER, APRIL 17, 1970-PAGE 3 Pershing firings successful Thursday Two U.S. Army Pershing missiles were launched from Black Mesa, 15 miles southwest of Blanding, Utah, Thursday. The missiles were fired by troops of the Federal Republic of Germany and were programmed to impact on White Sands Missile Range some 400 miles southeast of the Utah complex. Among those on hand to witness the opening rounds of this series of firings were officials of White Sands Missile Range, Ft. Sill, Okla., and Redstone Arsenal, Ala. According to WSMR officials, the current firing series is scheduled to end in mid-July. In addition to West Germany troops, units of the U.S. Army stationed in Europe will fire the 35-foot Pershing during the next three months. (Continued on Page 3) Pershing (Continued from Page 1) The Pershing is a two-stage ballistic missile capable of carrying a nuclear warhead. At launch it weighs approximately 10,000 pounds. Both the P-l and the P-1A Pershing support systems will be used during the spring firings. The first utilizes a tracked _ vehicle system to transport the missile and sup- | portive equipment while the P-1A uses a conventionally tired I vehicle to add mobility to the system. |
