Show BICENTENNIAL COMMEMORATIVE SYMBOL FOR DOMINGUEZ y ESCALANTE EXPEDITION Content: The symbol to commemorate the Dominguez-Velez de Escalante expedition attempts to characterize the interaction of the cultures in the American southwest at the time of the expedi tion. The Native American culture is represented by the stylized sun's rays, surrounding a typically Hispanic geometric motif. Thus, the symbol demonstrates the reciprocal influence that each culture had upon the other, with a particular emphasis upon the dominant Native American surround enveloping the dis It should be noted also that each placed culture of New Spain. of the four sides of the symbol represents a stylization of the initials D-E.
