Show ORI'ENCIA by Leila Ellis Waring Ortencia Howard Smith and Alexander Stalker lived in Salt lake City, Utah. I rerrernber seeing Ortencia only once when my nnther, Alvira Stalker Ellis, took rre to Salt lake with her and we stayed with Grandfather and Grandrrother Stalker. M:>ther went to the hospital where a sweet baby girl was born. Grandrrother kept ne with them. The baby was born 8 August 1907 and passed away three hours later. My father, John D. Ellis, carre down to Salt lake from Small, Idaho. We buried the baby in the Salt lake City cemetery. 'Ihis was such a tragic thing to have happen -- for ne -- as I really wanted to take that lovely little girl back to Idaho with us. I loved Ortencia very rruch and do rerrernber what a lovely and beautiful lady she was. I greatly enjoyed being there and I have always wished we could have been together rrore, but grandrrother lived only until 3 February 1908. Grandfather lived until 15 M3.rch 1912. In the fall of 1911, he becarr.2 ill and could not live alone any nnre so nnther took us younger children down there and we went to school there so she could take care of him. We t here. really liked being therewith Alexander and had a nice school year It was a new and exciting experience for us to live in a city. Ortencia and Alexander had a large family -- fourteen children-t wel ve grew to be nen and women. 'Ihe two youngest, Henry v. and Arthur, l i ved less than one year. I knew nnst of their family but knew Jl..rranda · 3anet very well as she was grandfather' s neighbor when we lived there with a i• m. l Airanda married Lewis Hook. 111e ir daughter Beatrice Hook carre to live with my folks and ma.rried Ed Kaufman and stayed there and raised two sons, Wallace and Kennet.l-i. Ammda had six children. They were a nice family. P.lexander married Enmaline Nelson. Wallace married Matilda Kelly. Ortencia ~.1m married George 'Wocxiward, but passed away at the age of twenty years . Janes narried Agnes Jolley. Sardis married Dora Kelly. Willard ma.rried Nellie Flack. Alma. married 1\lfaretta Parmley. Alivira Talita married John Daniels Ellis. They were my parents and lived at Small, Idai11o, where my father was a ranchrran, postnaster and had a store. He becarre postmaster in 1880, was Justice of the Peace and did the marrying ll1 that srrall comrunity. He was active t(X) in early politics in that part of Idaho. Theresa Cordilia taught sch(X)l rre.ny years and did not marry until 1958. She carre to visit my nnther at our horre in Culver City, California. She asked nnther about a girlhc:x:xl friend, Albert Shorten. M:>ther told her about him and also that he had lost his wi fe -- so Theresa said, "Well you can tell Albert that he can cone and marry rre now if he wants to." M:>ther told him this so he did cone to see her and they were married. 'Ihey carre often to our hone then and we enjoyed them. Fanny Elizabeth had married Albert's brother -2mibrose Shorten. Joseph Barnes Stalker ma.rried M2hetable Seeley and thEy lived in Felt, Idaho, for ma.ny years. Later they rroved to Idaho Falls. After Uncle Joe |
