George , Utah May (1857) I moved out of my house in the fort up to the Iron works, and began to build a house on the new oi!y plot , and went do\vn to the Rio Virgin with a company and located a farm and city plot , and organize d a Branch and appointe d Robert Covingto n to preside . August . I v,as elected a Represe ntative to the next Legisla tive session also Major of the Second Bat&llio n of the 10th Regimen t , also accompa nied Elder G. A. Smith on a tour td the Rio Virgin and Santa Clara . Septemb er . We started the iron works. Had reveived word to suspend all business and take care of the grain as the United States was sendi~ troops into the Territor y to oppress the Saints , and force officers upon us contrary to our wishes and the constitu tion. The last of the month started for conferen ce . October . Attended conferen ce . Had a good time , and returned much refreshe d , and went down to the Rio Virgin and visited the Saints and preached to them, also at Harmony . Novemb~r . Spent my time mostly at h~me building . Also at the request of Prest . Young went and employed an Indian int~rpre ter to go to San Bernard ino ,,,1th some gentile merchan ts and apostate s to see theM safe through to Californ ia. December 18th. I moved my family into my new house , although not auite fini~hed . (Ue.e. 1857} 3rd/# Left home in company with Bro . John D. Lee for Salt Lake City to attend the Legisla ture . The weather quite cold . 12thf Arrived in the city, Bensons . All well . Took board at Elder E.! . 14th Lesi slatures met and organize d . 1,th The Governo r delivere d his message , one of the most able documen ts I ever saw. 16th Met and the committ ees were appointe d , and adjourne d till the twenty- first . I went up to see my friends , found them all well. 20th Attended 111eeting in the Taberna cle . 21st Legisla tors met and passed some resoluti ons expressi ve of our appreci ation of the Governo r's proceed ings! and of our determi nation to resist the unlawfu l attempts of the Uniwed States to force their wicked officia ls upon us , contrary to the constitu tion. |
