Show for him. The boy looked to be on the verge of fainting and the sheer edge of the trail was only a bit over a meter away. Should the young wight lose consciousness. . . Just as she caught hold of his forearm, Janni sent another blast at her-Could the child not turn it down a fair notch? she grumbled- and the boy fell to the ground, unconscious. Well! thought Dr'Anya. She quickly tore off the squire's cloak, ripped it in strips, and tied him up securely. Then she lay him against the cave entrance, pulled the handglow out of the JackPony pack, and entered the cave. Behind her, the animals sniffed at the unconscious squire-destined, it seemed, to forever sleep through his master's battles- and hummed to him softly. Silence was total inside the cave and, since the trail outside was still murky, it was also full black. Dr'Anya had stepped to the cave side immediately and began feeling her way along the wall. She sent Janni the message that she was coming, her ears pricked for any sound of the knight. Then she heard a light clank somewhere ahead. Or was it behind? She froze in place. The chamber was circular and sounds tended to bounce around. She judged that the first side chamber was just ahead. She slid her hand along the wall to her right, and then jumped at the crash of armor, a hoop, and a half-dozen resounding clangs. Dr'Anya switched on the handglow and ran forward. There was the young Janni, sitting atop the big knight in the middle of the main cavern tunnel, beating on his helmet with a rock that must needs have weighed half a stone, yelling at her mother to give her some light. "Isaac and Ida!" 184 |
