Description Declaration and petition drawn up by John Dickinson for the Continental Congress The declaration, dated July 6, 1775, and the petition (dated July 8, 1775) were drawn up by John Dickinson. They explain how the colonists had taken up arms due to the British government's violation of their rights. Also included is an address to the people of Ireland, explaining the situation in the colonies and expressing sympathy for the similar oppression in Ireland.
