Show As you know the Deans' Council has adOpted the following proposal "for the duration:" "(1) All first-year civilian students and all secondryear civilian male students shall be required to take an appropriate threehour per week course in physical education; and all first-year civilian male students who are physically fit shall be required to take a course in military science and tactics, except that freshman and sephomore civilian, male students in the School of Mines and Engineering only.may elect to take either the course in.physical education or the 'course in military science and tactics. (2) Not more than three hours of credit shall be allowed toward graduation, for courses .in physical education falling into the category of "Physical Fitness" as described in the Armbeavy Physical Fitness Programs, (3) A standing committee of three faculty members appointed by the President shall consider and rule upon individual petitions ; ‘ " * ' ‘ filed in connection with these regulationse" ' ' ‘ representing unusual cases'which may be. " ' ' The above proposal was the result of a series of meetings of a comittee representing the Department of Physical Education, the Department of Military Science and Tactics and the Deans of the schools proposed. I have also had a series of conferenCes regarding the headship of the_Department. At the present time, we are investigating likely candidates for the headship of a proposed Department of Physical Education including Physical Education for Men, Physical Education for WOmen, Interscholastic Athletics, and Intermural Sports. When we have a definite name in.mind, we shall recommend that Dr. Marshall be continued as head of a new Department of Health, including the Health Service, in connect~ ion with his new duties in the School of medicine. The members of the Department of Physical Education have been very anxious to require the Physical Fitness Program of all male students. During the present quarter, more than 500 students have been participating in this course. The opposition to the Physical Fitness Program >has never been in the Department of Physical Education, but is centered in the professional schOols |
