Show Friday PM Juan and Jim - I have several things to give consideration to - to you both. Then, I'll fill in Juan, whom I've not written*- since my return.from the west. Juan is asking about using the High Uinta Project Funds for publication of Dave Winn's dissertation, in 2 or 3 bulletins, or other format. Depending upon Forest Service permission for such publication, I think this use of the funds is fine. I believe ' that Dave ought to I ve some benefit from it and this purpose would further the presentation of his work more effectively than might otherwise be possible. However, I would like to ask Mrs. Richter for some contribution toward the publication. She did provide me personally #250 last summer to help me pay expenses. And, I have promised her that I would come over and talk about and show slides on last summer's work. Would, you people then inform me about anticipated expenses for such publication as you wish, and let me approach her for help. Jim gave me a publication and show-i me how supporting individuals or groups are credited and I believe I could make a reasonable appeal for her assistance for this work. Particularly now since I have some slides of the "scientists" to show her - which I took last summer. Once you people get the necessary clearance for publication, please indicate to me the range of contribution I should ask her for. (Remember, we should ask for twice as much as we expect to get!) Juan underwrote my trip for five nights lodging or five per diem allowance. I was provided lodging for all but two places, so did not utilize the motel allowance. If you wish me to reimburse the High Uinta Project Fund, I will do this gladly. However, I did have to take a seven day dedi1"-*- on salary to be able to go to the conferences. Whatever you co.xoj.der fair, is agreeable with me. I did suggest to Guido Rahr that he sonsider helping defray Urness study when it is published - and he did not respond, so no use going that route again. Anyway, I'm still going to approach his Foundation once again for Urness. I have several irons in the fire, at present. I talked last night to Bd. of Directors of the Izaac Walton League about two issues. I discussed and showed slides of the Caribou Forest mining proposal and also raised the Rocky Mountain Coalition (proposal) for Protection of Renewable Resources. We had problems with a wall switch in the^meeting room of the bank, where the meeting was held, so I lost time in which to show my slides and discuss the other issue but this is what came out of the meeting. 1. Would I attend the Izaac Walton meeting in Milwaukee next month (March) and discuss the Caribou situation? ( Someone will look into this for me.) 2. Would I-consider attending and presenting the Caribou situation at the Annual Izaac Walton meeting in Baltimore, June 14-, if arrangements could be made for me to be there and be on the program? 3. If I could draw up a resolution six weeks in advance of the June 14 meeting, this group would forward it for presentation at the Annual Meeting. So, will you people put your thinking cap3 on and suggest what type resolution is needed. My lawyer friend here tells me that Patsy Mink has a bill in the House - HR84.55 - on oil share stripping. I can't provide ynu details now. ;••'.. ' • He left the meeting earlier than I, and I have not had opportunity to learn details of the bill. A resolution could cover the Caribou situation, National Forests and mining, abolishing the mining laws which are strangling public managing agencies, or whatever. I shall ask several people for their ideas, but you people ought to be contributing your thinking. In addition, I have another idea - which I tacked onto my talk at Pocatello. (It was the wrong place and the wrong occasion to present such an idea although the idea arose out of listening to all the |
