Show Requirements for soil preparation prior to the installation or seeding of turf grass in new residential and commercial construction. Public Law 102- 575, Subsection 207( f)( 2)( F) Background Appropriate soil preparation is a part of water efficient landscaping. ( See section on Water Conserving Landscapes in this report for a general discussion on soil preparations.) The addition of soil amendments will improve water infiltration into the soil and increase water holding capacity to enhance plant growth. They also provide better soil oxygen levels and allow deeper root penetration. Soil preparation is most effective in humid areas where landscapes depend primarily on natural precipitation during the growing season. In these areas, irrigation of lawns and gardens is supplemental. Appropriate soil preparation is used to hold natural moisture and minimize the frequency of supplemental irrigation. The climatic conditions prevalent in Utah translate to very limited natural precipitation in the growing season. As a result, turf landscapes depend primarily on irrigation. Status No jurisdiction in the state of Utah has legal requirements for soil preparation prior to planting. The Utah State Extension Service, however, makes recommendations concerning soil preparation and soil amendments. It is recommended that organic material constitute 5 percent or more of good topsoil. Potential Water Savings Soil preparation alone will not save water. Soil preparation is only a part of an overall water conserving landscape design and management picture that is required to save water. Proper irrigation managment is the key component of water conservation in landscapes ( See section on Water Conserving Landscapes in this report for recommendations on water conservation in landscapes.) * |
