Status No jurisdiction in the state of Utah currently requires commercial laundries to be designed or operated with water recycling and reuse. Of the commercial laundries contacted ( shown in Table 2), five operate in the Salt Lake Valley and one in Weber County. The five facilities in Salt Lake County are located within the Rose Park Water Reclamation Facility service area. Information on water usage at the contacted facilities and whether or not they currently employ recycling is shown in Table 2. Out- of- State Laundries Several large laundries in other states were contacted, such as Mission Industries in California. This company operates many large commercial laundries ( the closest one to Utah is in Las Vegas, and there are several in southern California) and is the largest commercial laundry company in the world. Mission Industries has an in- house engineering department to design and supervise construction and upgrades of their facilities. The company's chief engineer was contacted and their current practice is to include recycling as part of the design of new facilities as well as the upgrade and retrofit of existing facilities. Mission Industries calculates the payback for water reuse and recycling is seven years, which is primarily based on energy and heat savings. Hotel Laundries Several major and smaller hotels were contacted in the Salt Lake City area. Local major hotels typically have their own laundry service. Smaller hotels contract their laundry services to an outside commercial laundry. Several of the commercial laundries mentioned in the original study provided laundry services to these hotels. Larger hotels such as Little America have tunnel washers, while smaller hotels such as the Airport Hilton have industrial tub washers. No hotel contacted currently has recycled or reused water, nor are they currently considering a change. A typical hotel room will generate 25 lbs. of laundry per day. The Little America Hotel, with 850 rooms and 85 percent occupancy rate, will use approximately 27,100 gallons of water per day. This is equivalent to the total water use generated by approximately 60 Salt Lake City residences. Hospital Laundries Several local hospitals were contacted about water reuse in laundry facilities, and water use depends on institution size and management philosophy. Several hospitals have their own 58 |
