Show PART IV MEANS FOR MEETING NEEDS Properly placed rock reduce streambank erosion Special Fire Measures In the event of large wildfires, several emergency measures may be required, including soil stabilization of the fireline and also soils in the burn, channel rectification in and below the burn, checkdam construction in the channels, and the excavation of debris basins at the canyon mouths. It is sometimes desirable to clear the stream channels in and below new burns in order to minimize flood surges caused by washouts of debris jams. In some channels it may also be desirable to protect against bank cutting and gouging. Such protection may involve building revetments, sills, checkdams, or other structures. Bridge and culvert openings may require special treatment. As a final protection measure, debris basins should be installed where the terrain is favorable. Special fire measures are installed under emergency planning-funding basis dependent entirely upon the fire disaster situation in the future, 60 |
