Show Appendix B LEGISLATIVE RECORD CENTRAL ARIZONA PROJECT 80th CONGRESS, 1947-48 S. 433 - The original Central Arizona Project bill. It was in- troduced by Senators Hayden and McFarland, and proposed bringing water from Bridge Canyon to central Arizona by a gravity-tunnel route. There was no committee action on this measure. It was withdrawn and supplanted by S. 1175. S. 1175 - Introduced by Senators Hayden and McFarland in the first session. Supplanting S. 433, it temporarily delayed building of the gravity-tunnel route and proposed a pump lift on Lake Havasu behind Parker Dam, to raise Colorado River water 985 feet, after which the water would flow by canal to central Arizona. ------Hearings were held on S. 1175 by the Senate Public Lands Subcommittee on Irrigation and Reclamation on June 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 30 and July 1, 2 and 3, 1947. ------There was no final committee action on S. 1175, and it died with the 80th Congress. SJ. Res. 145 - This was the first joint resolution proposing that the Colorado River controversy be taken before the United States Supreme Court. As the United States Government was a necessary party to the litigation, the permission of the Con- gress had to be obtained to make the Federal Government a party. It was the purpose of this resolution to do that and to have the controversy finally adjudicated. The measure was introduced in the first session by Senators Downey, Knowland, Malone and McCarran. ------Hearings weree held by the Senate Public Lands Sub- committee on Irrigation and Reclamation on May 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14, 1948. ------It was disapproved by the committee and died with the 80th Congress. |
