| Abstract |
Thompson (b. 1918) discusses his family, the Depression and schooling. He joined the National Guard at age sixteen. He recalls experiences in Europe before being evacuated back to the US. Thompson was reactivated in the Guard as a supply sergeant with the 145th Field Artillery, the 40th Infantry Division, in January 1941. He was shipped to Hawaii after Pearl Harbor for island defense. He was later returned to Camp Roberts to lead training and was then reassigned to the 515th Field Artillery Battalion and shipped to England and later crossed the channel, landing on Utah Beach in September 1944. He entered battle near the French/German border. He describes his activities and occupation duty in Dachau before discharge in 1945. He joined the National Guard in Utah and was called up for active duty during the Korean War, where he served stateside and in Germany in the 115th Engineering Battalion. Discharged in 1954, he was called up again during the Cuban Missile Crisis for one year. Mr. Thompson continued active in the National Guard and served as Assistant Adjutant General of the Guard for Utah. He worked in civilian positions at Hill Field for eighteen years before retiring. Show WILLIAM H. THOMP ON J R 19 2001 BILL: But I went onto Denmark. And on one fine morning the 1st of August 1939 I was in the city of Aarhus, the second city of Denmark. It's on Jylland, on the peninsula. WIN: It's on the peninsula up above Frankfurt, right? BILL: We went our usual way through the business district of the city, and we saw a crowd of people gathered in the front of the newspaper office. They were putting up big posters, you know, like they used to do here in Salt Lake, with news flashes of what was happening in the world. And, of course, this was the day that the German troops marched into Poland. And there was just a shock registering in the faces of the people gathered around the newspaper office. There were other news flashes that same day that we got on a little radio back in our mission quarters. We called our mission president. And he said "Well, just sit tight, and we'll see what happens." Well, almost immediately, missionaries began coming out of Germany northward into Copenhagen. And they were being distributed out through the missions. Another Elder Thompson came to Aarhus and I was his companion for a few days. WIN: Thompson and Thompson. BILL: President and Sister Joseph Fielding Smith were touring the European missions at the time and were caught in Germany when the borders were closed. WIN: Really? BILL: They were on their way to London, but they couldn't go through Holland or France. So, they decided ... they found two airline tickets that were available and they came northward to Copenhagen. So President Smith stayed in Copenhagen and he was assisted by Mark B. Garff, the president of the Danish mission, in evacuating the 8 |
