Show the street. We got to where the subdivision we were in Sadr City ran into m r fa freeway, just kind of walked like that. I kind of think it was like the head of a nak everybody just kind of had this snake going back there into the city. I was right there actually. This is one part I feel like I have pretty good accounts of, at least what 2°d Platoon and 1 st squad were doing, because we were in the front. I was blocking off this road and at this point I'd learned to flick the back of my hands to tell cars to go away, and it was working pretty well. I was the A-gunner for Smith. Smith was just set up on the comer with his sub-machine gun. The Doc was up there with us, Doc Vanderbilt. Sergeant Muir was on the comer and Dahl was my team leader. Him and Adams, who's the guy I was really close with, that's who I'd shared meals and [unclear] were in a position on the other side of the road. So we were blocking off this street, so I was literally in the middle of this street, me and Donally. On the comer on my right had the sub-machine gun, the team leader, the corpsman. On my left, the other side of the street, kind of like a dirt island, was the actual machine gun position, where Tomsac's team was set up. Then Paul and Adams were in there, in this actual sandbag position, they just happened to be there. So I guess the basic idea was we were just going to sit here and disrupt traffic until someone fires at us. And it worked, because we looked like a soft target, I guess. I'm sure they had no idea how many of us there were and they didn't see amtracks and they didn't see a lot of the stuff they're used to seeing. So we did eventually get fired on. The other side of this freeway was mostly open area, dead space, but a compound kind of on the right hand side. Farther back on the left hand side there was a larger compound. 31 |
