| Abstract |
Mel Lewis (b. 1917) grew up in Redding, California, and operated a private airstrip before enlisting in the Army Air Corps one day after Pearl Harbor. He flew with the 14th Air Force in Pakistan, the 5th A.F. in the South Pacific, and the 7th A.F in Saipan and Guam. He was also a flight instructor in Greenville, South Carolina. 77 pages. |

And, o It k aj bat th t ndard Optical Company, just kind of to get my feel for what I was g ing t d and hat I wanted to do and what the opportunities around w re. And so I lay d with th n1 fl r about a little over a year, right on 273 South Main. BBL: MEL: shop. BBL: MEL: And what were you doing for Standard Optical? Well, they had a camera shop and so they hired me to run the camera Oh, really? Yeah. And it worked out pretty good, because I met a lot of people and, of course, I've always been extremely interested in photography and still pursue it these days. But that's where I met Jack Shade, because he'd done-well, again, cause I knew Jack- BBL: MEL: BBL: MEL: When you wereOverseas. Right. Well, let's see, he was stationed on Tinian and I was on Saipan and it's just a mile across. BBL: Uh-huh. MEL: But anyway we got together then there and about that time, I had some opportunities come up. The old Monarch Airlines that was working out of Reno had merged with Frontier Airlines that was operating out of Denver and they were looking for pilots with the DC-3 experience because that's the kind they were flying then.
