| Abstract |
Mel Lewis (b. 1917) grew up in Redding, California, and operated a private airstrip before enlisting in the Army Air Corps one day after Pearl Harbor. He flew with the 14th Air Force in Pakistan, the 5th A.F. in the South Pacific, and the 7th A.F in Saipan and Guam. He was also a flight instructor in Greenville, South Carolina. 77 pages. |

Show MELL WI J L 1 2001 E D OF IDE A, TAPE ONE BBL: MEL: BBL: MEL: BBL: MEL: All right. I think that will work there. So that worked out pretty good. Well, did he just happen to be there that night? He just happened to be there. Oh, man! And he was filling in for the guy that attended the service station while he'd gone over to get dinner. BBL: Oh, wow. MEL: (laughs) And so many things over my lifetime that have happened that way, like it was pre-ordained or something like that, to me. BBL: Yeah. MEL: But that worked out pretty good, too, because it was during the off-season for golf, and there was quite a famous country club or golf course called the Alpine Country Club in Fairfax, California, which is right close there, and he'd go up there for his practice rounds. And so, for some reason or another, he took quite a liking to me and he'd take me up there and I'd caddy for him. BBL: Really? MEL: Oh, just practice rounds. I didn't know a golf club from an alarm clock. But we'd be going around on practice rounds, he'd look at a particular shot, and he'd say, "Bub, what do you think I ought to use on this shot? Do you think I ought to use 27 |
