| Abstract |
Mel Lewis (b. 1917) grew up in Redding, California, and operated a private airstrip before enlisting in the Army Air Corps one day after Pearl Harbor. He flew with the 14th Air Force in Pakistan, the 5th A.F. in the South Pacific, and the 7th A.F in Saipan and Guam. He was also a flight instructor in Greenville, South Carolina. 77 pages. |

Well, did you actually go a round with him? Oh,no. Oh, when you stepped out, he just-that was the end of it? He turned cherry red and every body was just laughing. But it ruined your football career. That ruined my football career. But my swimming career was pretty good. And as a matter of fact, I was invited to join the Dolphin Club in San Francisco, and the initiation into the Dolphin Club was you had to swim the Golden Gate-and that's a mile and a quarter across there-and you have to do that in twenty-six minutes. The tide changes. You have to get in between tide changes because when the tide is coming in or going out through Golden Gate, it's like the Colorado River rapids. So I did that. But this football coach, he said, "Oh, Lewis, he'll never make that-he'll never make that," 'cause I was still in high school. BBL: MEL: back. BBL: MEL: Oh. But I not only made it, but I waited for the tide to change and swam Wow (laughs). And that, again, settled anything, any opportunity I ever had to get into sports at school.
