Show MELL WI .J y l , 2001 MEL: And it s ems like a terribl thing but that x ctly th way that it was. And one of the main reasons I left California, because ther wa attitude down there. tnuch f that BBL: Oh, yeah. MEL: But, the way I got through high school was I was a pretty good swimmer, and as a matter of fact, I was the captain of our swimming team. BBL: Oh, really? MEL: And I did pretty good at that because my English teacher was also my swimming coach (laughs). So I managed to get a lot of good grades. I earned them, every bit of it, but as far as the other athletics were concerned, like football and things like that, I didn't do too well in that because I wasn't on the right side of the tracks. BBL: Oh, I see. MEL: And we had a football coach there, and his name was Neil. And as a, matter of fact, he was a P.T. instructor, too, at the same time. And he would get us all out there and line us up like we were in P. T. training and then he'd walk up and down in front of us and chew you out and tell you what a bunch of no-goods you were and how you'd never make this and that and that was his thing. He thought he was Knute Rockne or somebody. BBL: Yeah (laughs). MEL: And he had a habit of ending this little spiel with saying, "Now, if there's any one of you guys that think you're a better man than I am, just step out of line" (laughs). I did. I figured I could take him, and I really wanted to. BBL: Yeah (laughs). 22 |
