| Abstract |
Robinson (b. 1923) recalls her childhood in Wisconsin. She was a student at Carroll College in Waukesha when Pearl Harbor was attacked. She went to Milwaukee and worked in a defense factory, then enlisted in the Marine Corps, women's reserve. After boot camp at Camp LaJune, North Carolina, she went to Norman, Oklahoma, for aviation machinist mechanical school. She sailed aboard the SS Lurlene to Pearl Harbor, where she was crew chief on an SN-J or AT-6. After returning home in 1945 she attended the University of Wisconsin on the GI Bill. 49 pages. |

Show LORRAINE J. ROBINSON JULY 10 , 2001 pilot , and we got another pilot , and they took us o ver to Maui , and we went way up to where there were some big water f a l ls where i was quiet . It was a garden island . What nice day we had , crisp , good , clean times we had . WIN: So you could just fly over to another island and do some sightseeing? LORRAINE: Yes , if you could get somebody to take you . You couldn ' t just do it . WIN: Oh , yes , I know that . LORRAINE: I went over in a big plane , a cargo plane , one time . I was coming out on the end ·of the ladder and I had heels on . You now , we were dressed up . I broke my heel , and I went flying down this great big , and the crew chief caught me . If he hadn ' t caught me , I would have splattered on the deck . It ' s funny when you think of things like that . WIN: What would be a typical day for you with your duty assign-ment there? You would get up at what time? LORRAINE: I suppose we got up a 6 : 00 o ' clock , went to chow . We would go to the mess hall to eat . WIN: Then you would go out to work on the plane? LORRAINE: Yes . Then we were on duty . We had to go to wo rk . WIN: What would you do there? Can you describe , basicall y , your duties? 31 |
