| Abstract |
Robinson (b. 1923) recalls her childhood in Wisconsin. She was a student at Carroll College in Waukesha when Pearl Harbor was attacked. She went to Milwaukee and worked in a defense factory, then enlisted in the Marine Corps, women's reserve. After boot camp at Camp LaJune, North Carolina, she went to Norman, Oklahoma, for aviation machinist mechanical school. She sailed aboard the SS Lurlene to Pearl Harbor, where she was crew chief on an SN-J or AT-6. After returning home in 1945 she attended the University of Wisconsin on the GI Bill. 49 pages. |

Show LORRAINE J. ROBINSON JULY 10 , 2001 LORRAINE: Oh , yes , everybody spoke English . WIN: You were what? Three generations? LORRAINE: My great , great , great grandparents homesteaded. WIN: Homesteaded , over five generations . Once you got old enough , and you got out of the eighth grade , where did you go to high school? LORRAINE: Cambridge high school that was about t wo-and - a -half miles away . One of the guys in the class lived out in the country and he had a Model - A. So he would come to town and pick us up , my sister and I and another girl who rode in this Model-A . WIN: So it was two - and- a - half miles away , but that was still , basically , in Rockdale . LORRAINE: It was another town called Cambridge . WIN: Cambridge . LORRAINE: That ' s where the high school was . WIN: So that ' s why it was named Cambridge High School , right? LORRAINE : Yes . WIN: I should have figured that out . LORRAINE: That ' s right . WIN: Okay , you were in cambridge . Was that in toward Edgerton or was that in the other direction? LORRAINE: It was in the other direction from Edgerton . I was born 6 |
