| Abstract |
Robinson (b. 1923) recalls her childhood in Wisconsin. She was a student at Carroll College in Waukesha when Pearl Harbor was attacked. She went to Milwaukee and worked in a defense factory, then enlisted in the Marine Corps, women's reserve. After boot camp at Camp LaJune, North Carolina, she went to Norman, Oklahoma, for aviation machinist mechanical school. She sailed aboard the SS Lurlene to Pearl Harbor, where she was crew chief on an SN-J or AT-6. After returning home in 1945 she attended the University of Wisconsin on the GI Bill. 49 pages. |

Show LORRAINE J. ROBINSON JULY 10 , 2001 LORRAINE: Where we landed? We landed at Pearl Harbor . We landed and it was Pier 10 , we landed , and we all went overseas WIN: Where did you leave from? Did they ship you across country on a train and ship you [where]? LORRAINE: Oh , I skipped . From North Carolina , we had to go to overseas training in San Diego . I left from San Diego , and in San Diego we had six weeks or something like that . WIN: You had six weeks in San Diego . How was San Diego then? LORRAINE: Fine . I met a young man who was the captain of the guards , you know . He knew all of the , we used to go off-base all of the time , and we didn ' t have liberty . Oh , dear . Then one time we got caught . My friend , another girl and I , we got caught , and they had us washing windows one evening . The whole evening , they had us washing windows . WIN: That was your punishment for being caught . What did you learn there when you were in San Diego . Do you remember what kind of training they were giving you? LORRAINE: We had classes , and , of course , we had drills. We were drilling on the marine corp base there on the parade grounds . WIN: I was just wondering what they needed to teach you to [do] LORRAINE: To go overseas? WIN: To go overseas that they didn ' t teach you earlier? LORRAINE: I really don ' t remember what those classes were . Isn ' t 27 |
