| Abstract |
Robinson (b. 1923) recalls her childhood in Wisconsin. She was a student at Carroll College in Waukesha when Pearl Harbor was attacked. She went to Milwaukee and worked in a defense factory, then enlisted in the Marine Corps, women's reserve. After boot camp at Camp LaJune, North Carolina, she went to Norman, Oklahoma, for aviation machinist mechanical school. She sailed aboard the SS Lurlene to Pearl Harbor, where she was crew chief on an SN-J or AT-6. After returning home in 1945 she attended the University of Wisconsin on the GI Bill. 49 pages. |

Show LORRAINE J . ROBINSON JULY 10 , 2001 WIN: The y c alled that pickling? LORRAINE: Pickling the engine , yes . They ca l l ed it pickling . That ' s one thing they did . I didn ' t like that j ob very well , but that was one thing they got us doing . WIN: So you were preparing replacement engines t o be s ent overseas? LORRAINE: Yes . I was excited , I got to New York from the re . WIN: How long on a leave would you need to get to New York? LORRAINE: Seventy- two hours . WIN: It didn ' t give you much time in New York , did it? LORRAINE: No . WIN: Did you drive? LORRAINE: One time I went to Washington , D. C. I got a r i de up with some marines to Washington , D. C. We were waiting for him t o show up , and , finally , he showed up . The guy had gotten marri e d , and we were going to be so late getting back . We had to drive all night to get back , and his little wife road with us . I was late . We got there just in time to change clothes . Another fun e xper i ence I had when I was at Cherry Point , one of the boys in our gang at high school was stationed at an army base near . Well , it wa s quite a ways . But anybody who wanted to , we could go t o a dance over there . · They had a cattle car . A cattle car was a tra ile r-type thing with the seats on the side , and you just went in those . 24 |
