Then, it became very difficult with plastering with drywall starting to come in. Up in Idaho, I already started in on drywall there. The plasterers ridiculed me. They said, "You're crazy to go in and work with that stuff. Don't you know, we come in and put chicken wire over the whole thing and plaster it?" I said, "Let me tell you, the drywall will get better. They will improve it and the work will be done better." I still took these words. I was one of the very last plasterers over here that could do fancy work, you know, the fancy moldings. And so one fellow, he said to me, "I have some fancy work to do, but I don't know anything about it. Will you help me?" "Yeah. I'll help you." So I came in and I was to show him how to miter the comers. Then, he'd go over and try to miter another comer. He did try to do that and it looked awful. I did the other three and he was still working on that and he'd done a mess of a job. He built them out over the whole thing and he couldn't figure out how it was to be done, even though he'd watched me doing the first one. I did two more, while he messed up number four. So I chopped that out for him and put that in, with him standing and watching me. He said, "It looks easy enough." But he couldn't do it. But I fmished that job off for him. He helped me on a few jobs too, but I didn't like his work, so I kind of got away from that. But we got more and more dry walling and I went into it. My partner, there 46 |
