W 11 I 1n 11 had decided because I saw that the older guys was laid off first and call d back last th t you needed to control yourself. That's when I decided that I was going into busines for myself. So, after getting well acquainted with the business as they did it over here I said to the union guys, "I declare myself going in for contract." Oh you cant do that. We can't have everybody to go in contract." So a couple of older guys said to them, "You can't do that. He has the right to do whatever he will. He is acquainted with this business and we know him and will stand good for him." So he didn't have anything to say. So besides that, I picked one of the guys. I says, "If you want to go out, I' ll go fifty-fifty with you, but that's all I can do." He said, "Okay, I'll take it." So I started business. The fellow that we worked for a lot of the time there went bankrupt. So I said to him, "How much are you in trouble for? I'll buy you out of the business." So I said to my partner, "Do you want to go in on that and buy him out?" "Yeah, but I don't have any money," he says. "Okay, never mind, he owes you 350 dollars. He owes me 350 dollars. We' ll ask him what he wants for his business." He told us that. We wrote a check out. "Here's the check. Sign these papers." He signed the papers and we took over his business- his planks, his mixers, and everything he had. We were in business. He had business here that he hadn't taken care of. He said to us, "I got too big for myself. I had lots of business and I hired lots of guys and I couldn't cut it. You two were the only ones to make money for me, but it wasn't enough for what I had. You take care of the business." 44 |
