Dominguez-Escalante Trail Bicentennial Interpretive Master Plan and Final Report

In 1776 two Franciscan Friars (Atanasio Domínguez and Silvestre Vélez de Escalante) traveled from current Santa Fe, New Mexico westward in search of a passage to Monterey, California. While this mission was unsuccessful, it was one of the first European expeditions to the Four Corners region of Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona. In 1976, a bicentennial committee formed to document this trail and form interpretive programs. This report provides the Dominquez-Escalante Committee with 1) an outline interpretation of the Dominquez-Escalante story and related subjects with sketches, maps, diagrams and photographs which form the basis for interpretive panels, 2) a prototype design for use at eight primary ramada [covered campsite] sites, 3) specific recommendations for a logo and types of hardware to be erected throughout the four-state area at locations, and 4) specific miscellaneous recommendations on how to implement the program.
