The non-members were John Crow, of Fort Clara, and Enoch Davis, of Parowan. (Martineau, "History of Mission," pp. 4, 8 ) , 28. William H. Dame, "Journal of the Southern Exploring Company for the Desert," p. 5, L.D.S. Archives. Hereinafter cited, "Journal of Company." This 40 page manuscript is very similar to Martineau's "History of Mission." Jfartineau actually wrote this account; however, it is believed that it was largely dictated by1 Dame. It was written in a small notebook belonging to Dame which contained a few pages of unrelated material in Dame's own hand from previous years. This was probably the original manuscript from which Martineau wrote his "History of Mission" when he returned. Dame's "Journal of Company" is included in the Journal History under the date 25 April I858, pp. 6-20, but it has been altered to some extent. These two manuscripts, by Dame and Martineau, provide the primary documentation for the history of the Southern Exploring Company. |
