Army Pershing Missiles were scheduled for launch Wednesday from Black Mesa, southwest of Blanding. The training rounds to be fired by troops of the U.S. 7th Army were, programed to impact on White Sands Missile Eange, New Mexico, according to Jim Love-lady, White Sands information officer. Missile range personnel had scheduled intermit-tant roadblocks which were to be in the. four corners area beginning at 6:30 p, m. Wednesday and continuing throughout the evening. White Sands Missile Range provided the safety and instrumentation support for the Pershing firings. The Seventh Army troops were to operate under simulated wartime tactical conditions during the launches. In addition to-serving as annual practice for the combat ready soldiers, the firings have provided data for product improvement and for evaluating systems and procedures. Four Pershings launched from off-range site Four U. S0 Army Pershing artillery ballistic missiles were launched from Black Mesa, southwest of Blanding, Utah, Wednesday, Nov. 4. The training rounds, fired by troops of the U. S. Seventh Army, Europe, were programmed to impact on White Sands Missile Range. One of the four rounds was terminated in flight when a malfunction occurred in the missile following launch. That missile, however, as well as the other three, impacted safely on the range. The missile destroyed in flight was the third round of the night. Range officials said the missiles were launched from the Utah site at 8:35 p.m., 9:05 p.m. and 10;25 p.m. Wednesday and at 12:35 a.m. Thursday. The rounds brought to 12 the total number of Pershings fired from the Blanding site during the current fall series. Four more rounds are scheduled for later this month. Intermittent road blocks were established in the Four Corners area beginning at approximately 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. They continued throughout the night. On U. S. Highway 163, blocks were set at White Mesa Indian Village south of Blanding and at a point just north of Bluff. On Utah State Highway 262, blocks were set at Aneth and at the Hatch Trading Post Junction. White Sands Missile Range provided safety and instrumentation support for the Pershing launches. The Seventh Army troops were operating under simulated tactical conditions during the launchings. |
