Sweazey, <br> Salt Lake City, Utah. <br><br> My dear Mr. Sweazey:- <br><br> Thank you very much for your letter of 10th inst., in response to mine of 4th inst. The circular to teachers relating to the care of free text books, I have on file. Thank you all the same for this copy. <br><br> Another matter of importance to us, in regard to which I should like to have your opinion, is that of free tuition in Mormon schools. The Board took action in regard to free tuition, giving two years trial. That time expires with the close of the present year. Should the experiment prove satisfactory, the time can be extended; but if the end hoped for is not attained, namely, a large increase in enrollment in the day schools, then the action should be rescinded. The Board has never had been quite satisfied with conditions in Utah, and were abundantly willing to make this trial for two years, in order to satisfy the good brethren on the field who felt that we should make an exception of Utah. We find that regardless of the fact that in other States and Territories having free schools, and some of them providing free text books, also, our receipts from tuition are increasing continually. This is due to two causes: increased attendance and advanced price of tuition. When you have opportunity will you make inquiries in regard to the question of free tuition, and give me your opinion? <br><br> I, too, have heard some rumors in regard to a local superintendent of schools.
