On the Way to Leading the Way: Students Leadership courses for students can be found in many places on campus, from the aerospace studies department to the nursing department. Opportunities for students to be leaders can be found in any of the 170 Associated Students of the University of Utah (ASUU) registered student organizations. Many other councils and offices provide leadership opportunities for students including Greek honors groups, Lowell Bennion Community Service Center, residence hall advisor or student host, peer counseling through the Alcohol and Drug Education Center, religion-affiliated groups on the Interfaith ________________ Council, peer advisor for Upward Bound, and legislative internships through the Hinckley Institute of Politics and in the Presidential Intern Program. In order to be successful in any of these groups, students need to have an understanding of the responsibilities associated with being a campus leader. Formal leadership development sessions for students are just as prevalent as workshops for employees and administrators. Many courses are "' '" offered for credit, and some include opportunities to attend conferences and training sessions. Leadership courses and curriculum for students can be found in many of the departments on campus. It really is a learning experience in action." courses emphasize leadership for the specific discipline; other courses are more applicable to campus leadership. The undergraduate studies office offers a course called "Foundations in Leadership." This course provides students with the knowledge, mind-set, and skills to assume key leadership positions on campus and in the community. Students get acquainted with a variety of leadership theories and practices that increase their effectiveness as leaders, both at the University and in the community. The introduction to leadership and policy in higher education course (ELP 3510) for undergraduates provides students with an historical, organizational, and conceptual background for understanding leadership in colleges and universities, whereas the leadership development course (ELP 3960), sponsored by the same department, introduces students to leadership theory while facilitating learning opportunities and experiences on campus. Outside of the classroom, the University sponsors leadership seminars and conferences for students. Students may not earn credit on their _____________ transcripts, but they do earn valuable leadership skills from professionals. Last year, the Dean of Students office developed and hosted a leadership conference for students, the LeaderShape Institute. LeaderShape Institute is a six-day |
