Show page 4 , Fall/Winter 2002 or administrative committees, can be a waste of time if not planned and run effectively. Likewise, interviewing candidates for a team is a difficult process. The interviewing course introduces a behavior-based selection process that assesses the interviewee's technical as well as interpersonal competencies. The documentation course provides hands-on understanding for effectively documenting team and employee issues. Learning how to establish competencies, expectations, and goals to maximize staff performance can be discussed at the session focused on conducting evaluations. Level Three classes are about improving management and leadership capabilities. Sessions vary to include project management, conflict management, and coaching skills for managers. In the project management course, the attendees gain the skills and insight needed to successfully plan and implement projects. The conflict management session discusses ways to initiate and sustain difficult conversations with peers and staff members. And the coaching course is for leaders who would like to support, improve and maximize staff performance in an effective and positive manner. Finally, Level Four courses focus on maximizing leadership opportunities through strategic planning and being a leader of change. Change is hard; it's even more difficult when you have to lead others through it. The leading change course shares strategies for guiding people through loss, transition and new beginnings. The strategic planning course is an interactive workshop in which the attendees learn how to develop and implement a strategic plan specific to their leadership needs. The department of human resources also offers professional development workshops that are valuable for anyone in a leadership position on campus. The sessions are divided among six categories: communication skills, customer service, organizational skills, diversity, general professional skills and personal development The communication skills workshops include topics from effective listening to giving and receiving difficult feedback. Other sessions discuss conflict management through communication, tools for enhancing presentations, communication skills and techniques for interpersonal communication with peers, team members, managers and customers.
