The first is a happy change. While we continue as a student-run, student-written, student-photographed magazine dedicated to presenting the student voice to faculty, we are adding a modicum of application to each issue. You will see a "Director's Corner," where I present a faculty perspective on how the central topic for the issue affects us as teachers. For the topic of leadership, I have supplied an essay on risk-taking and failure that, I hope, provides some thoughtful assistance to all of us who have tried a new thing that ultimately didn't work. In other areas, you will see sidebars and boxed information containing ideas for incorporating the student-written information into your teaching. Throughout, you will find invitations to join the discussion. The second change is a sad one. We have lost one of our most consistent and erudite champions, Doug Birkhead. I am saddened by his passing, because I will miss his humor and his focused, gentle guidance of our student writers. This issue contains a memorial to him, constructed by the students who gained so much from his direction. Safe passage, Doug.
