Show , Fall/Winter 2002 page 7 development experience designed to help participants learn to "lead with integrity." At the Institute, everyone is both a teacher and a learner. Through the conference, students discover how to make exceptional improvements in an organization, workplace or community. In early October, the first University of Utah United Leadership Conference was hosted at Snowbird Mountain Resort. The United Leadership Council is a group of student leaders dedicated to uniting student groups and ensuring positive and lasting contributions to the campus community. "The conference was a complete success... mostly due to the work of the United Leadership Council," said Chris Carlson, one of the students on the planning committee. According to Carlson, the bonding, the connections and the networking were incredible. The conference included six workshops and three keynote speakers addressing leadership skills and issues. The workshops varied in focus from networking, finances, and recruitment to leadership insights and the essence of leadership. Bob Whitman, CEO of Franklin Covey, and author Stephen Covey spoke between the leadership workshops, and University of Utah President Bernie Machen addressed the conference attendees during the closing ceremony. "I was very impressed with the quality of speakers. They were truly world-class," said Associate Dean of Students Annie Nebeker. Nebeker also facilitated the "Essence of Leadership" seminar, which focused on how leaders can gain and lose credibility and the importance of leading with integrity. "The students were fabulous. I enjoyed presenting to such a bright and thoughtful group," she said. "Summing it up, it was good networking experience. It was definitely beneficial to hear the speakers; Stephen Covey was amazing!" said Amy Schofield, student leader and facilitator. "His speech was very informative and motivational." Although Schofield was part of the planning committee, she firmly believes that nearly all of the attendees got at least one valuable thing out of the conference. Schofield's favorite portion of the weekend's event was a session called "Burning Issues." "We talked about religious differences, diversity, communication across groups and the Greek divide-the political issues surrounding being a member of a sorority or fraternity, and what outside members think-all of the sessions were intense." Schofield looks forward to being a part of the planning committee for next year's conference. "It was simultaneously a learning and leading experience," she said. Leadership is essential to any college or university's sensitivity to values in higher education. Although some are "born leaders," most people can improve their understanding of leadership and associated skills. Collaboration among faculty, staff and administrators to develop and demonstrate leadership skills is of the essence of a successful university. Likewise, preparing students for leadership positions increases their likelihood of career success and happiness. For the novice or seasoned leader, the University of Utah offers and promotes hundreds of leadership learning opportunities for students, faculty, staff and administrators.
