France was not slow i seizing this opportunity to strengthen her already tigh grasp on Indo-China and with the help of Spain, whos Catholic missionaries had also been roughly handled b Minh-mang's men, the French navy sailed into Saigo and captured this Gochin China settlement. By the yea 1867 thestate of Cochin Chinawas proclaimed a Frenc colony; Cambodia has been a French protectorate sinc 1866; Tonkin was annexed in 1884,and Laos, the mos backward ofthe five states,becamea French protectorat in 1893. The state of Annam has been under the Frenc sinc the time of Gai-long the gullible old king.
