It is correct to classify th technique of Indo-China as being closely akin to that o China,and therefore itis no doubt correct to assume tha papermaking was originally introduced into Tonkin b the Chinese during the period when the Indo-Chines were under the direct influence of the Mother Country. The exact date of introduction, however, will always remain obscureasnoauthentic records exist relating to thi ancient craft in Indo-China. The Anamese came originally from the highlands of Tibet, but the methods use in making their paper show little relation to the unusua technique pradticed in this mysterious land to the north nordo the Anamese papermakers have muchin commo with the methods of the Southern Shan States of Burma orwith the traditional manner of making paperas carrie on by the Siamese workersin Bangsoom and Chiengmai The Papermaking Materials of Indo-Chin The papermaking materials of Indo-China embrac three dominant fibers: (1) the bark of shrubs and trees (2) bamboo, (3) rice straw. In late years the workers hav turned to the reclaiming of considerable waste paper, bu this practice is far removed from the use of the superio materials that were employed in the heyday of Indo-Chi nese papermaking.
