During the boiling of the materialin thi solution the strips of bark are kept in agitation throug theaction ofalongwooden polein the hands ofa worker fresh alkaline liquor is added as the cooking continues thus reducing the bubbling, and also supplying any los through evaporation. The fuel used is rice straw and th discarded rough outerbark. Thelength ofthe boilingdepends upon the natur of the bark, whether from youn or old trees, and upon the strength of the alkali solutio and theintensity of the heat.
