Theancient craft asit exists today, however is but a remnant of its former importance, although th actual methods have remained the same. Previous to th coming of the French, thousands of skilled native artisan found employment in the village handmade paper mills and additional workers were occupied in the cultivation harvesting,and preparation of the materials. Toalimite extent the French officials of Indo-China have encouraged the fine native crafts, but nevertheless the age-ol art of making paper by hand will not long survive The French possessions in Indo-China consist of th colony of Cochin Chinaand the proteétorates of Annam Cambodia, Laos, and Tonkin.
