Miohael Piggott, of Il@ois, has been appointed.-' special agent for the prosecution of this work,aud on August 10,1891.., -he was directad to begin m the vicinity of Redding, Oal. He has mgde d within the Roseburg (Oregon) land district 528 allotments and certified them to this office, and he is now similarly e61 ga,gcd in California and Nevada. Sinccmy last annual report, the General LandOffice has transmitted to this office 142 applications from Indians for lands under the said ; fourth section. Thcsc'applications (with others heretofore transmitted - &om the Land Office) will be considered by .the special illotting agent in this office, and if the applioants are found to be entitled thereto, allotments .will be made. GENERAL REVIEW OF ~ L O T ~ NWOTRK . . . With reference to the general subject of Allotments, I thefol-lowing cursory survey of the entire field: Nm Sor7c.-No allotments have been. made and at present none are contemplated by this office, as there is no law anthorizing the same, ' and in the present condition of the lahd-titlesit would be imprwti- :, ,cable to attempt to allot the lands. . . Mich6gan.-The work of rnakiig~@lotmcnts has been largely wm- .pleted, so that very little land remains in reservation. ' . , Wisconsin.-A ~najorityo f the Indiana located upon the several Cup. . pewa reservations were allottedlands some years ago under the - ' provisions of the treaty of September-30, 1854 (10- Stats., 1109), I n the opinion of this officte, the land8 on these resewation& being chiefly valuable for timber, are hot subject to allotment under tl& : act of February 8,1887. Owing'to the- investigation into allegedtim-ber fraudson tbcse reservations and the action of the Senatecom-mittee on Indian traderships during the Fift,ieth Congress, the york :. of making dlohnents under the treaty of 1854, above referred to, has . been suspended. .. The OneidaReservation has been divid&l among the Indians of that - reservation pro rata. . . - No allotments have been made upon the Menornonee Reservation, . which is also heady timbered.. The Stockbridge reservation contains 11,800 acres. No allotments ' have been made. on this reservation pending legislation looking to the . adjustrne~o~f tc ertain dSculkies between the several classes of Stock- . ~ bridge kdiaus. If it should be decided that it is expedient to allot thetimber lands in Wisconsin, the work of making the auotments wuld be completed in two to three years. .
