| Abstract |
Abe Cline was interviewed five times by Leslie Kelen. Cline (b. 1895) talks about his father and grandfather, both of whom are buried in Jerusalem. He recalls various jobs held early in his life (often as salesman) and tells a number of stores about his years with the National Guard (Mexican Revolution) and the U. S. Army (World War I). He recalls his childhood and teenage years in Salt Lake, the Free Masons, doing business with Mormons, the Greek population, the Depression, France in World War I, and his feelings about Hitler, Germany, and the creation of the state of Israel. Other topics include the Cline Equipment Company, evaporative air coolers, the Salt Lake Jewish community, Rabbi Sam Gordon, his extended family, and Jewish businesses in Salt Lake. 179 pages. |

And l ·had bridge clubs. In those days, which I wouldn ' t .·n \i ab ut because I wasn't interested. And we kids, we did what-ever we v.·anted to. And we never lacked - we never got bored. We always had something to do. Andinthe summer time, we would play baseball and :hthe winter time, we would go sledding if we wanted to. We couldn't go skiing because there wasno skiing here then. Youwent to the - ym, YMCA and some of the other gyms . AC Yeah, we belonged to the YMCA for a while. And we were very active there. In - not intheir program ebcause we didn ' t care about their programlBut in their- infue athletic part of the program, especially the exercising . We played basketball . And did gym work. Swam. Used to do alot of running. Wife boxing, too. C Well, I took a course in boxing from a man at the YMCA . I weighed 98 pounds . I was 5'9'" tall. And when! say 98 pounds , that's stripped. And these, a:hers, the next smallest guys to me were 130 pounds. L Youvere really skinny. AC so. And we - actually the only professionalinstruction I ever had in athletics was in boxing. [laughs] And, I learned alot. |
