| Abstract |
Abe Cline was interviewed five times by Leslie Kelen. Cline (b. 1895) talks about his father and grandfather, both of whom are buried in Jerusalem. He recalls various jobs held early in his life (often as salesman) and tells a number of stores about his years with the National Guard (Mexican Revolution) and the U. S. Army (World War I). He recalls his childhood and teenage years in Salt Lake, the Free Masons, doing business with Mormons, the Greek population, the Depression, France in World War I, and his feelings about Hitler, Germany, and the creation of the state of Israel. Other topics include the Cline Equipment Company, evaporative air coolers, the Salt Lake Jewish community, Rabbi Sam Gordon, his extended family, and Jewish businesses in Salt Lake. 179 pages. |

AC We ll, they hadn ' t e xa ctly moved t here but they were there. Not p e rmane n t ly . So my bro t h e r and my parents drove~ to Dayt on and my s i ster-in -law come t o Dayton. And ofcourse, my AUnt , Doc's mother, was l i ke a mother to me. I was like a son t o her. OF c ourse, she only had 6 sons and one daughter. SO s he l iked family . But Cousin ABe was part of thefamily just as t he rest of t hem. So we had the wedding in Dayton, Ohil I lived with Doc, when he was there. Doc built a house and he had an e xtra r oom t hre. And this was my room whenever I was in town. And Mildredstay edwith my Aunt Bessie. Aunt Bessie had room because Doc had moved out of there when he got married. Soshe had an extra r oom . Sofuere was plenty of room there. But when we went up t o get the license, of course, Ihad to give them an address and I gave t h em Doc's address, which was the only address I had in DAyton. And the next day, of course, on the marriage notices, Abe Cline had taken a license tobe married to Mildred Epstein and the address was shown t here and pretty soon the phone began ringing. "Doc, why - what the hell is going on@ You toldus you married that gal and hereyou've been living with her for a year!!" "Well," he said, "We decided to try it for a year and now we're getting married." |
