| Abstract |
Abe Cline was interviewed five times by Leslie Kelen. Cline (b. 1895) talks about his father and grandfather, both of whom are buried in Jerusalem. He recalls various jobs held early in his life (often as salesman) and tells a number of stores about his years with the National Guard (Mexican Revolution) and the U. S. Army (World War I). He recalls his childhood and teenage years in Salt Lake, the Free Masons, doing business with Mormons, the Greek population, the Depression, France in World War I, and his feelings about Hitler, Germany, and the creation of the state of Israel. Other topics include the Cline Equipment Company, evaporative air coolers, the Salt Lake Jewish community, Rabbi Sam Gordon, his extended family, and Jewish businesses in Salt Lake. 179 pages. |

AC Yeah, but he as a better mechanic than he was a store keeper. L Did :our father ever tell any other stories, about here, the earl~ people he knew? AC If he did, I can't remember them. At least I can't recall them no'. He told me alot of stories, but they're mostly about his childhood. L Would youtell a couple? AC Well, I think I toldyou about him being an apprentice to a glazer; no-- Not a glazer, to a carver of bones. Handles for knives there,-And he became as a kid, about 13 years old, his job was to keep the toolssharp and he had a genius for sharpening tools. Yes, Iknow that to me- did he have others? AC He told me about the lible ... I was about, I'd say 10 or 11 years old and welived in Blackfoot, Idaho, and my Dad, among other things, in trying to make a living made cigars. But he was having trouble in business and also having trouble with his hands and his feet. And so, he sold the cigar factory. The cigar factory consisted of a few tools that they use for making cigars. But he sold it to another gentleman who is not a cigar maker. And my Dad worked for him, rnaing cigars. Now, |
