Transcript (typescript, 141 pages) of a series of interview with Nebuzo Endo, a Japanese-American living in Utah in 1984. Mr. Endo (b. 1911) recalls being sent to Japan as a child for his education, Japanese culture, surviving and earthquake, and returning to live with his parents in Oakland, California during the Depression. He and his wife talk about their courtship and discuss Japanese marriage customs. Other topics covered include Judo, moving to Utah, farming, the Buddhist Church, and being Japanese during World War II. |

Show Nobuzo Endo 3-29-84 NE Well, Iwill start from the time I was in Los Angeles. I don't exactly remember the year, but I'd been working with this company from one district to another, as the I) seasons going on.And~at would be between Oxnatrd to ~ San Diego. So I covered quite a large area. SF So this was a produce shipping company. NE Yes, a produce shipping company. SF What was your job there? NE My job is to contact with the farmer and if anything they needed, I would ask the company to furnish to them. So. Then. When -crop was ready, and they're ready to harvest. Why, we had this packing house in operation and I take care of the packing end of it. With the foreman we had in thepacking house. And that, of course, the crop - after the crop is harvested, then are we going to next district , and so on to San Diego. But usually at San Diego, the Ghu i~+i1~-- themain area, I worked. usually about a half year over there. And one year. But usually about a half year. SF What was the name of the company. NE The Frank N-a-r-u-to Naruto Co. SF Was this a real big company. NE Well, it's - I wouldn't say big company. Well, medium sized company. SF How many employees maybe? NE Oh, that varies as the season goes along. |
