Transcript (typescript, 141 pages) of a series of interview with Nebuzo Endo, a Japanese-American living in Utah in 1984. Mr. Endo (b. 1911) recalls being sent to Japan as a child for his education, Japanese culture, surviving and earthquake, and returning to live with his parents in Oakland, California during the Depression. He and his wife talk about their courtship and discuss Japanese marriage customs. Other topics covered include Judo, moving to Utah, farming, the Buddhist Church, and being Japanese during World War II. |

And of course {if} somebody passed away in thefamily or relatives, why, we go to the funeral and End side one - Begin side two SF What games did you play, the boys play, that you and your brothers played. NE Well, they had a baseball game over there? SF Even then you played baseball? NE Oh, yes. I remember that. And then they - in the summertime, we go out and we do swimming. And well, just about the same as little boys enjoy around here. Just about the same thing we do over there. SF Were you lonely when your brothers left? NE Oh, yes. But, I have my uncle's children to)you know) associate with-So it wasn't too bad. Til that earthquake come. SF What happened when the earthquake came? NE Well, fortunately, we ah - the house been collapsed. And u ~ none of~have injury or anything like that happening to us. So, we just had to stay out of the house. We made a little place where we could stay safely. For about 3-4 days. By that time, why, the earthquake - what they call-after = ah, what do you call that - after effects were pretty well over, but that was one of the sad memories in |
