Transcript (typescript, 141 pages) of a series of interview with Nebuzo Endo, a Japanese-American living in Utah in 1984. Mr. Endo (b. 1911) recalls being sent to Japan as a child for his education, Japanese culture, surviving and earthquake, and returning to live with his parents in Oakland, California during the Depression. He and his wife talk about their courtship and discuss Japanese marriage customs. Other topics covered include Judo, moving to Utah, farming, the Buddhist Church, and being Japanese during World War II. |

And your instructor sometimes in~ases like that, even your instructor will say, so and so, you did pretty good to*Vf. keep up. OK. That's the advise he gives you. SF So the instructor has the right to tellme that I did pretty good. BUtnot my parents. NE {laughs} SF When you were growing up. Theother thing is, that maybe if would be - If my parents said something, it would be encouraging pride and not encouraging doing the judo for the judo sake. DO you know what I mean. NE I can see what you're trying to get at. The relationship between parents and their children .. But, now, parents have to have to know this - their children may be did pretty good, what. If judo, there is a more and more higher -- SF Of course, NE He has a long road to go up. You see. SF Of course. So all in all, sometimes parents won't say - he knows a 11 t h at, that f ee 11. ng, he ~~~ all that feeling, but he won't say too much to the children. But the instructor |
