Transcript (typescript, 141 pages) of a series of interview with Nebuzo Endo, a Japanese-American living in Utah in 1984. Mr. Endo (b. 1911) recalls being sent to Japan as a child for his education, Japanese culture, surviving and earthquake, and returning to live with his parents in Oakland, California during the Depression. He and his wife talk about their courtship and discuss Japanese marriage customs. Other topics covered include Judo, moving to Utah, farming, the Buddhist Church, and being Japanese during World War II. |

Show Nobuzo Endo 2-7-84 s1:3 SF What did you call him? NE Well, I don't remember too much about my grandfather because I was so young. SF What about your mother's brother. What did you call him? NE I don't recall too much of him. But my father's brother. SF That's who I mean. NE We call Uncle. SF You call him Uncle. NE In English. In Japanese it's Ogisan • {Does not spell} SF OK. When you lived there, was that customary. Did lots of people do this? NE Well, that's only limited to people who came to the United States and wants to send the children back to Japan. It's more like we that's the way they do it. Mostthe closest relative takes care of the children. SF But there were three boys in the family that went back to Japan. That's alot of children for somebody to-- NE Somebody to take care, that's right· SF Did your father send money to Japan. ;, NE Oh, yes. Ahuh. Oh, yes. SF Did you have to write letters to your father and your mother? NE Oh, once in a while. But, you know when you're in that age, young age, we have alot of things to do.
